Comprehensive Hygiene Exam
Gum Disease Detection
Regular (at least twice a year) checkups include gum disease detection from our hygienists. A periodontal probing is done to measure the gum pockets. The deeper the pockets, the more severe gum disease.
Soft Tissue Exam
A soft tissue exam involves a visual and tactile oral cancer screening of all the tissues in the mouth.
Oral Hygiene Exam and Instruction
Our dental hygienists provide the proper oral hygiene instructions to you in order to improve your home dental care. We may recommend a type of mechanical toothbrush, antiseptic rinse or other over-the-counter products based on your dental needs.
Routine Cleaning (Prophy)
Routine cleanings involve above the gum line cleaning to remove light to moderate plaque and tartar.
Scaling / Debridement
Scaling involves above the gum line cleaning to remove moderate generalized tartar build-up. This can also be done prior to scaling and root planing.
Deep Cleaning (SRP)
Deep cleanings, or scaling and root planing (SRP), involves non-surgical subgingival cleaning performed by your dental hygienist. A special ultrasonic device is used to remove heavy deposits under the gums. Then plaque and tartar are removed and the root surfaces are smoothed.
This process helps keep the area free of bacteria and may help ligaments to re-attach, reducing pocket depth that could lead to periodontal disease.
Intra Oral X-Rays
These full mouth x-rays show us each tooth in your mouth all the way down to its roots. Intra-Oral x-rays also show the bone that surrounds the teeth. This helps us detect bone loss and decay.
The panoramic (or Panorex) x-ray provides a full view of the jaw, bone, and teeth to help in diagnosing dental disease.
Advantages of Digital X-Rays
- Up to 80% less radiation than traditional x-rays
- Smaller films are inserted into the mouth, allowing for optimal comfort
- Provides for a more accurate diagnosis for Dr. Burgess
