Aqualizer is a type of TMJ relief treatment that provides immediate jaw relief. It is a short-term, non-invasive, removable dental splint that allows your jaw muscles to automatically reposition the jaw to where it naturally functions best.
By biting on the Aqualizer, it causes the fluid in the splint to distribute bite forces evenly across the bite, reducing TMJ pressure and pain to ensure relief.
A nightguard may be right for you if your jaw feels stiff, you have difficulty opening your mouth, or if your jaw muscles ache or feel sore in the morning—you may be grinding your teeth.
To avoid further treatment that may be needed in the future for bruxism (teeth grinding), we provide nightguards that you can wear comfortably at night that are custom designed to fit your teeth and provide you jaw relief. Ask us about our services we offer for nightguards.
With regard to jaw joints, jaw muscles, and teeth, equilibration refers to adjusting your teeth so that when the jaw muscles are at rest, the jaw joints are in a stable, neutral position and does not place any stress on the muscles.
People who need equilibration may notice that their jaw muscles are often tired because the jaw is subconsciously trying to reposition their jaw so that it rests with the least amount of stress on the teeth as possible. Misaligned or missing teeth can result in this. Typically solutions for correcting equilibration include adjusting crowns or fillings.
TMJ Referrals (Dr. Phillips)
TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is often diagnosed in patients who have pain the jaw muscles, headaches, and other types of facial pain. If you suffer from these regularly for more than a month, along with problems opening your mouth, chewing, and clicking/popping noises in your jaw, we can appropriately refer you to Dr. Phillips, Houston’s local TMJ specialist.
TAP (Snore Appliance)
The Thorton Adjustable Positioner (TAP) is a simple solution for snoring and sleep apnea. The TAP holds your lower jaw in a forward position so that it does not fall back and open during the night and causes the airway to collapse.
The TAP is custom-designed especially for you to have an easy, comfortable fit, and thus lessening the overall number of doctor visits. Ask Dr. Burgess if a TAP appliance could be right for you.
